Case Study, Oil & Gas Network, June 2000

Challenge

A gas producer in southern Alberta required an economical separator to match lower volumes and the economics of shallow gas wells. With several hundred producing gas wells and the need to remove water at the well site, the problem of accessing a suitable separator product was a difficult one. Separator packages were available in conventional sizing but the costs were too high, making it uneconomical to produce and operate the wells. The other important requirement was the separator needed to operate trouble free and require little to no maintenance.

Objective

Develop a gas separator that is right-sized to fit shallow gas and marginal well applications and provide sufficient separation. The design criteria included:

  • lower cost
  • simple to install
  • maintenance free

Results

Crimtech Services Ltd. took on the challenge to design and develop a suitable solution to the problem. A study was performed to better understand separation, and a challenge to conventional ideas was necessary to develop the first proto-type. A simple 4” test design was assembled and proven on one well, and from there a more refined separator bottle was developed to meet the requirement. The name of the new product became the FloDrip Wellhead Separator. Installation of 150 separators in the initial development stage provided the necessary testing to re-affirm Crimtech’s theory. Since 1996, when the first FloDrip separator was developed, an evolution has taken place. The move to larger conventional wells has been a natural progression and an 8” and 9” separator is now being used for new drills and for conventional separator replacement.

Nova Chemicals requested Crimtech Services to repair two vessels which were constructed 1996 and were developing cracks in the nozzle to shell welds. These vessels were in Hydrogen service. Nova was aware of the defects in these vessels and when an opportunity arose to remove them from service we were able to perform the requested repairs. These repairs had a very short time line, as the system was only out of service for 5 days and the vessels had to fit back in their original location. Responsibilities included liaison with ABSA and our local AI, procurement, fabrication, internal cleaning and external painting

Client: Collicutt Compression Solutions Ltd.
Collicutt Compression was modifying a compressor package for their client which required modification of the suction and discharge bottles. These modifications were quite extensive and required the removal of existing nozzles and replacement with larger nozzles. Responsibilities included liaison with ABSA and our local AI, procurement, fabrication and external painting.
